A Child's View...
A Day in the Life

While you are busy at your job, you won't have much chance to see what actually goes on day after day. Of course, any time you are free to visit, by all means, do. When you do, you will be pleased with what goes on. You will see the children busy with their friends.

The children talk a lot as they play together. They look at books and pictures and exhibits in the room. They listen to stories. They work on puzzles. They take trips. They paint. They work with clay and blocks. They pretend and make believe.

Our Lakewood Learning Center Director, Neta Hansen, describes a typical day for the kids….

"All children are greeted by their teacher on arrival and are helped to find an activity. Parents will sometimes stay for awhile. Early in the day we serve breakfast. We then split into groups where the children plan their day, then break into smaller groups for more one-on-one attention and instruction in math, science, etc. Then it's open-Center time when the kids can play in any of the developmentally-appropriate areas. The children have rest time everyday. We also have at least 5 minutes of outside time every day, even if it's rainy so the kids can stretch their legs. Back inside, we have story/reading time, then play outside for a while before it is time to go home."

You'll see happiness when you look through the eyes of the children here at Thomas Learning Centers. We asked the children about going to school here and this is what they have to say…

"We play outside and we take naps and we make stuff together and we eat. We nap, then we wake up again. Then we go outside in the front. Then our moms come pick us up. That's what we do here." "They pick flowers for my mommy"
"I put sand in here." "I like to play with the parachute. It's all colors."
"I eat lunch." "We have a housekeeping center!"
"At Circle Time, we read a book."
"We have a treasure box of toys!" "I draw stuff."
"We learn to work and do papers." "I play and I count then I go to bed and sleep."
"I can climb on the monkey bars" Does that make you a monkey? "No" with a giggle! "We get to see the puppet show!"
"It's my favorite school because I go here a lot."
"I get to play with my friends." "At Circle time, we sing and do everything!"
"Sometimes I twist the swings." "We get to go to the park."
"When I'm a big kid, I'll be able to swing myself" "We get to count money."
